Getting Started
Every therapist works slightly different. The way I approach my work with children is based on many years of experience working with families in clinics and school settings. Children do not grow and develop in isolation. Feeling supported and understood by their family and in education environment is key to them flourishing. Throughout my work with your child, you will be invited to regular review meetings, I may also suggest a series of parenting therapy sessions to support the work I do with you child. Where applicable, I can also meeting with your child’s school to help them better understand their needs and ways to support them.
Below outline sets out the stages we move through at the start of our work together, from our first meeting to ongoing therapy. The timings are a guide rather than a fixed schedule; how quickly we move through each stage will depend on your child and your family. My starting point will always be with parents and carers.
Stage 1
1–2 sessions
Initial parent sessions
We begin with the parents only. These sessions give me the chance to understand the presenting issues and to gather a thorough developmental history.
This is also a space for you to ask questions and to think with me about what has brought you here.
Stage 2
1 session
Family session
The next session includes you and your child together. The session is split: some time with everyone together, and some time with your child alone.
This helps your child meet me in a way that feels supported and gives me the chance to spend time with you as a family.
Stage 3
3–4 sessions
Assessment period
I then see your child one to one for three weekly sessions. This is an assessment period, during which I get to know your child and begin to form a clearer picture of what kind of support will help.
Stage 4
1 session
Parent review
Following the assessment, I meet with you to share my thinking, to discuss how we proceed, and to set out my plan going forward.
Part of my recommendation may be parent work alongside the work with your child. This could be with me, or with another practitioner.
Ongoing work
Weekly sessions and regular reviews
If we agree to continue, sessions with your child are weekly.
